International Poetry day

As the huge poetry fan that I am, I would like to share with you today a collection of my favorite quotes out of some of my favorite poems.

From “Ithaca” by C.P Cavafy:

“As you set out for Ithaca

hope the voyage is a long one,

full of adventure, full of discovery.

Laistrygonians and Cyclops,

angry Poseidon—don’t be afraid of them:

you’ll never find things like that on your way

as long as you keep your thoughts raised high,

as long as a rare excitement

stirs your spirit and your body.

Laistrygonians and Cyclops,

wild Poseidon—you won’t encounter them

unless you bring them along inside your soul,

unless your soul sets them up in front of you.”

From “Variations on the Word Sleep” by Margaret Atwood:
“I would like to be the air
that inhabits you for a moment
only. I would like to be that unnoticed
and that necessary.”

From “Welcome to society”, anonymous poet

“You can fall in love with anyone, as long as it’s who we choose
And we’ll let you have your opinions,
But please shape them to our views,
Welcome to society,
We promise that we won’t deceive,
And one more rule now that you’re here,
There’s no way you can leave.”

From “The bell jar”, by Sylvia Plath

“I wanted each and every one of them,

but choosing one meant losing all the rest,

and, as I sat there, unable to decide,

the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and,

one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”
